Beijing continues to claim the democratic island as its own territory.

A group of Japanese lawmakers focused on relations with Taiwan has renamed itself the “Japan-Taiwan Diet Members' Consultative Council,” replacing its previous reference to the “Republic of China.”

China, which claims democratically governed Taiwan as its own territory, was angered after Japan and the Philippines said last month they would begin formal talks on their maritime boundaries.
